Take the Stress Out of Choosing an Insurance Brokerage With These 3 Tricks

It’s time to make the choice as to which insurance brokerage is going to provide you, your family, and your business with the protection you want. How do you narrow down your choices? Which insurance company will provide the insurance you want at a price you can afford with the customer service you need?

If you don’t know what to look for, your search can quickly become mired in extraneous details. For over 20 years, Will Marshall Insurance Brokers have been connecting individuals in Simcoe County with the right insurance brokerage for their unique needs. Here’s what we’ve learned about how to choose an insurance company, and what you should look for during the process.

1. What is the History of the Insurance Brokerage?

A good indication of the quality of a specific insurance company or brokerage is the merit of their history. Take a moment and research where they provide coverage, the types of coverage that they offer, and what they as a company value and support. If an insurance brokerage has only recently been established, they may not yet have the experience or systems in place to provide you with the coverage you want.

If, by contrast, the insurance company has a long track record of exceptional service, you can be more confident about your decision to obtain insurance from them. This isn’t to say that an insurance brokerage can’t achieve excellence straight out of the gate, but it does help, in our experience, to be able to examine their established track record thus far.

2. Is the Insurance Brokerage Invested in the Community?

When you make the decision to purchase insurance from a specific brokerage, you’re trusting that they’ll be there to provide the help you need when you need it. Unfortunately, there are plenty of insurance agents out there who are only interested in a quick sale, which means that when you need to make a claim, you’ll be doing it on your own. So how do you determine which brokerages are genuinely invested in you and your success, and which ones just see you as another paycheck?

One of the best ways to determine a brokerage’s commitment to its customers is to take a look at what they give back to the community. Do they host fundraisers for local charities? Do they participate in community events for the betterment of the community as a whole? If they do, that’s a good indicator that they’re civic-minded and that to them, you won’t just be another customer. You’ll be a member of their community, and they’ll do right by you.

3. Does the Insurance Brokerage Provide the Coverage You Need?

So an insurance brokerage has a flawless reputation and its commitment to the community is unquestionable. So what? If the insurance company doesn’t offer the specific kind of insurance you need, it’s not useful to you.

Let’s say that you’re looking for residential insurance. Company A has a policy that will only cover your home. Company B has a policy that will not only cover your home but has an add-on available to cover your boat and cottage, too. Even if Company A has been in business longer than Company B, it makes no sense to choose them, because when it comes time to make a claim, they won’t be able to cover what you need.
